New York landlord drove out tenants with dead cats

An unscrupulous New York landlord left a sack of dead cats in an empty apartment as part of a campaign to drive tenants out of the building, they claim.
Residents of an apartment building in Bushwick, Brooklyn, say the stench was so bad that they had to hold their noses as they went up and down the communal stairs.
Daisy Terry, one of the tenants, said: "It was so bad, we thought it was a dead body."
New York housing inspectors later found a bag of dead, rotting cats in a vacant ground floor flat several weeks after the smell had started to waft around the building.
Backed by members of the city council, the rent-stabilised tenants are now suing a property company, Heskel 1, which bought the property last year.
They also allege the company removed the stairs leading to the basement and filled hallways with rubbish after they refused to accept money to move out so the building could be redeveloped.
The landlord has so far refused to comment on the allegations.
Christine Quinn, the New York City Council Speaker, said such cases were "happening all over our city and we must ensure wronged tenants have the right to confront their harassers in court".
