MARATHON DOOR MAN REACHES GOAL

A 30-year-old Geordie celebrated with a pint of beer at John O'Groats yesterday after completing an end-to-end charity marathon - carrying a door.
Brian Walker, from Newcastle, is poised to win a place in the record books as the first to achieve the feat.
The self-employed joiner left Land's End on June 22, shouldering the 40lb pinewood door. He originally intended attempting to make the fastest cycle ride between the two extremities, but he switched to the more offbeat attempt after recalling an early childhood memory.
Speaking shortly after crossing the finishing line, he said: "I remember when I was very young being very impressed by my father, Harry, carrying a door about four miles from the builder's yard to our house."
Mr Walker, who was supported throughout by his wife, Nicki, had to have a day off early in his journey to recover from painful shoulder sores and blistered feet.
But he maintained an average of 25 miles a day and completed the last 20-mile leg yesterday from just south of Wick.
Mrs Walker said: "We cer tainly got a few strange looks on the way up. There were a lot of puzzled looks as well as smiles and we got a lot of drivers giving us some friendly toots."
Her husband's effort has been approved by the Guinness World Records and will be entered once it is validated.
The effort is set to raise more than £5,000 in sponsorship for Cancer Relief Macmillan Nurses.
